In the late 1990s and early 2000s Mr Tustin captured quite a selection of digital video in and out of science lessons and around school. These profiles of the 2004-05 New Wisconsin Promise Schools of Recognition continue with a look at Hayward Middle School. More than a quarter of the student population of this school is Ojibwe, and the school's commitment to incorporating Ojibwe culture is highlighted, along with its reading, Life Math, and career education programs, as well as collaboration among staff, a quilting partnership, professional development plans, and Circle of Friends program to include special needs students.

Completing its third year in HUSD, this preschool program provides an engaging three-hour educational setting twice a day at three district sites. Each classroom serves up to 24 students, 16 typically developing children and 8 identified has having special needs. Under the caring tutelage of a four-member team—a general education teacher and an instructional assistant and a special education teacher and a paraprofessional—the youngsters participate together in standard activities for their age: circle time sharing, learning activities, and play. Many schools have “collaborative”—or “inclusion”—classes of general and special education students, primarily for grades K-12.
